What Brightcore is for

Simple tools · practical knowledge · good intent
01

Be useful

Build small tools and projects that solve a real problem, save time or make useful information easier to reach.

02

Share what works

Document the process clearly: what was built, what failed and what was learned along the way.

03

Keep it positive

Use technology thoughtfully — with respect for people, privacy, public information and the communities that use it.

Vremenar

A Discord bot for the Slovenian precipitation radar. It checks whether the official ARSO radar animation has changed and posts an updated link to the official source in a selected Discord channel. It keeps only its newest post, making the latest radar easier to access without re-uploading ARSO imagery.

Before you start: Vremenar posts a link to the official ARSO / meteo.si radar source; it does not upload a copy of ARSO imagery. Source: ARSO. Vremenar is an independent, non-commercial project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by ARSO. Never share your bot token, publish it in screenshots or commit it to GitHub. Replace every placeholder in CAPITAL LETTERS with your own value.

1

Install Python tools

Open Terminal and install Python, virtual-environment support and pip.

$ sudo apt update $ sudo apt install python3 python3-venv python3-pip -y $ python3 --version
2

Create the project folder

Create a folder in your home directory, create an isolated Python environment, then install the libraries.

$ mkdir -p ~/vremenar $ cd ~/vremenar $ python3 -m venv .venv $ source .venv/bin/activate $ python -m pip install --upgrade pip $ python -m pip install discord.py aiohttp
3

Create and invite a Discord bot

In the Discord Developer Portal create a new application, open Bot and choose Add Bot. Under OAuth2 → URL Generator, select the bot scope and invite it with only: View Channel, Send Messages, Attach Files and Read Message History. Do not give it Administrator permission.

4

Get your channel ID

In Discord enable User Settings → Advanced → Developer Mode. Right-click the target text channel and select Copy Channel ID. You will add this number to bot.py.

5

Create bot.py

Create the source file and paste the Vremenar link-only code. Change only CHANNEL_ID to your own channel ID. Do not put your token in this file.

$ cd ~/vremenar $ nano bot.py # In bot.py: CHANNEL_ID = YOUR_DISCORD_CHANNEL_ID

Save in nano with Ctrl + O, press Enter, then exit with Ctrl + X.

6

Store the bot token securely

Create a root-owned environment file. Replace PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HERE with the bot token copied from the Discord Developer Portal.

$ sudo nano /etc/vremenar.env DISCORD_TOKEN=PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HERE $ sudo chmod 600 /etc/vremenar.env
7

Test it before using systemd

Run the bot manually first. If it connects and posts the official ARSO link after a radar change, stop it with Ctrl + C.

$ cd ~/vremenar $ source .venv/bin/activate $ export DISCORD_TOKEN="$(sudo cat /etc/vremenar.env | cut -d= -f2-)" $ python bot.py
8

Create the background service

Find your Linux username with whoami. Replace YOUR_LINUX_USERNAME below with that exact result, then create the service file.

$ whoami $ sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/vremenar.service [Unit] Description=Vremenar Discord ARSO Radar Link Bot After=network-online.target Wants=network-online.target [Service] Type=simple User=YOUR_LINUX_USERNAME WorkingDirectory=/home/YOUR_LINUX_USERNAME/vremenar ExecStart=/home/YOUR_LINUX_USERNAME/vremenar/.venv/bin/python bot.py EnvironmentFile=/etc/vremenar.env Environment=PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1 Restart=always RestartSec=10 NoNewPrivileges=true PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target
9

Enable and start Vremenar

Reload systemd after saving the service, enable automatic startup and start the bot.

$ sudo systemctl daemon-reload $ sudo systemctl enable --now vremenar $ systemctl status vremenar

The successful status contains active (running).

10

Use these commands later

$ sudo systemctl status vremenar $ sudo systemctl restart vremenar $ sudo systemctl stop vremenar $ journalctl -u vremenar -f

Use the last command to see live logs if the bot does not post a link.

If the bot cannot post

Confirm the channel ID and check the bot has View Channel, Send Messages, Attach Files and Read Message History in the target channel.

If the token was exposed

Regenerate it immediately in the Discord Developer Portal, update /etc/vremenar.env, then run sudo systemctl restart vremenar.

If systemd fails

Run journalctl -u vremenar -f. The most common mistakes are a wrong Linux username, wrong file path or a missing Python package.

Source and use

Source: ARSO / meteo.si. Vremenar links to the official radar source. Users remain responsible for complying with the source provider’s current terms and applicable law.
